Waterland PE: MEDIAN acquires Kliniken Wied
Berlin/Wied — MEDIAN, since 2011 a portfolio company of the investment company Waterland Private Equity Investments and the largest private operator of rehabilitation clinics in Germany, takes over Kliniken Wied GmbH & Co KG. With two homes in the region between Bonn and Koblenz (Wied and Steimel), the company has specialized in inpatient rehabilitation in the field of addiction disorders since 1974, a core area also of MEDIAN. With 166 employees, the Wied clinics care for more than 210 planned beds. The focus is on inpatient and outpatient treatment of alcohol, medication and drug addiction, co-treatment of somatic and psychosomatic illnesses as well as non-substance-related addictions such as eating disorders and gambling addiction.
Dr. Carsten Rahlfs, Managing Partner of Waterland, says: “The two homes are a respected institution. With their focus areas and high quality of care, they are an ideal fit for MEDIAN. At the same time, we can once again increase our regional presence in Rhineland-Palatinate. We are consistently continuing our buy-and-build strategy, which has made MEDIAN the largest private rehab clinic operator.”
With Waterland’s support, the MEDIAN Group has grown in recent years, in what is now 19 transactions, into a company that is one of the five largest private hospital groups in Germany and is investing heavily in buildings, technical equipment, digitization and new tools to better measure therapeutic success. With Waterland’s transactional expertise, the Group continues to grow in a fragmented market, offering patients and payers a distinctive profile and high quality standards. Together with the two new facilities, the Group now comprises 120 facilities employing 15,000 staff and treating more than 230,000 inpatients annually in more than 18,000 beds. The healthcare company includes rehabilitation clinics as well as psychiatric acute care hospitals, therapy centers, outpatient clinics and reintegration facilities in 14 states. The company thus offers nationwide coverage of so-called aftercare and participation services.
